First Year Lawyers Here Is One Big Lesson I Learned
Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers First Year Lawyers: Here is One Big Lesson I Learned Iâm writing this week to help lawyers starting their first job in a law firm this week. Over the years, I have been asked many times to give a presentation Starting Right for Career Success. If you click you will see that in October, I will give this presentation to young Boston lawyers. My challenge will be not to overload them with too much information. I want to give one âah haâ moment take away that they can actually use their first year. I recently thought about when I started in 1971. I had gone to University of Richmond Law School. Dean Muse required that we wear suits and ties to class. I owned a couple. I remember one had cost $14.95 at a discount store. Nancy and I bought another suit along with two shirts, two ties and socks from a discount menâs store in Richmond for $49.95. While my two outfits met Dean Museâs requirement, they looked their price. When I finished law school in September and got my bar results, I went directly to the finest menâs store in all of Richmond to buy a suit that would enable me to actually look like a lawyer. I remember finding a REALLY expensive suit for $295 and a really expensive tie. I was disappointed because I knew I couldnât afford the suit and tie. The salesman sensing my problem offered to let me pay $20 a month. That closed the sale for me. With my suit tie and the briefcase my father gave me I thought I at least looked like a real lawyer. In December I would be going on active duty in the USAF, meaning my expensive suit would get a lot of closet time. For the two months before active duty I sought to get court appointed to as many cases as possible. I vividly remember my first case. I represented a 14 year old accused of burglary. I visited the scene of the crime, where he had been caught along with a 35 year old coming out of a house with the homeownerâs TV. I interviewed his mother and the neighbors. Then I met with my client in the county jail and prepared for my debut in court. I arrived at court wearing my expensive suit and carrying the briefcase my dad gave me. When I met the judge and they brought my client in from the jail, I came to the realization that my 14 year old client had vastly more courtroom experience than me, including more experience with this judge. I put on my best âsave the trees, save the whales, save a poor, easily led astray 14 year oldâ defense. I argued this poor youngster had been led astray by his 35 year old partner. When I finished what I thought was a compelling argument, the judge called me to the bench along with the prosecutor. When we got right in front of him, he said: Mr. Parvin, that was a really good try. There is only one slight problem with your argument. Instead of the 35 year old leading your client astray. It was actually your 14 year old client who led the 35 year old man astray. What is the lesson of my story for a first year lawyer? Things are not always as they first appear. Dig deeper to find out what really happened. Make your best effort to see things that other lawyers miss. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Piboidmo Day 15 Floyd Cooper Walks Outside At Midnight
Blog & website of children's book author Tara Lazar PiBoIdMo Day 15: Floyd Cooper Walks Outside at Midnight by Floyd Cooper I find inspiration in the oddest of places, at the oddest of times. Looking back after having illustrated about 100 picture books, of which only five I have also written, I find that I have been most inspired by things visual. Early in my developing years my mom told me stories or read to me and I would visualize her words. Picturing the tales as she spoke was easy and second nature. It would not change for me, the visualizing, as I began to read myself. I would also digest and consume visual media such as magazines like the Saturday Evening Post, Life, and Ebony. Comic books didnât escape my attention, in particular Mad Magazine, DC Comics and Marvel. Movies and television also provided visual stimuli to my budding imagination and I consumed everything within my orbit. There were periods in my youth when my household had no TV or the money for a movie or a new book. My imagination was forced to fly solo, on automatic pilot as it were. Seeking ways to keep the entertainment going, I would look at my surroundings in unusual ways like hanging my head over the edge of the sofa upside down and imagine walking through the house as if it were turned topsy- turvy. I would zoom in real close to a clump of grass and dirt and visualize moving through this landscape as a tiny scout until a lazy beetle or hasty ant would come by and chase me from my daydream. And I would draw and paint! I would construct scenarios in my head about my siblings and gain revenge for perceived misdeeds and come out the hero in the end. My imagination didnât skip a beat! These exercises helped develop the ability to easily and without much effort, create a narrative from nothing. To keep my imaginative acuity stretchy and fluid. But with all of this early cognitive stimulus, my career as an illustrator and the field in which I now work and make my life, making picture books, presents such pressure on the imagination, taxing the ability to produce day in, day out, book to book, original fresh ideas and visions on demand that eventually it became more and more difficult to stay inspired. It began to take longer and longer for the muse to come. Deadlines, editorial demands and even the trim size and gutters of the book became limits and hindrances to the creative process. The pressure of producing art in a stifling environment became the norm and began to take a toll. One day I sat down at my table and could not move forward. I had reached the point of burn-out! My instincts told me to get away. This is how I discovered the powers of walking outside at midnight. A midnight walk outside in any given season youâll find the mind takes a rest from the pressures of production and allows the doors of the brain to fling wide open with the breezes of inspiration! It matters not whether country or town, noisy or quiet, as long as you can see the sky in itâs velvet caress. You may even catch a glimpse of the Museâs own shadow, flitting about on the peripheral. Try it! Think hard about what you want to produce be it picture or prose. Then get up! Walk out into the night giving it not a single thought more. You will find upon you r return, the sprouts of fresh ideas ready to grow and⦠I can be inspired sometimes with a single image that will be so full of emotion as to lead to several more paintings and even the entire book. I can be inspired by a visit to a museum or gallery with masterworks on display. I can be inspired with rejection of my idea. The image above was to be cut from the book when my sketch was unclear and the editors thought the ballet masterâs hands belonged to the little girl. I poured a little more into the art after that! The one thing that inspires me most, more than midnight walks, more than a museum, even more than rejection isâ¦â¦ A text that sings, that embraces my imagination and injects it with energy. Good story inspires great art! Floyd Cooper has illustrated more than 100 childrenâs books and has been honored with the Coretta Scott King award for his work. He recently released MAX AND THE TAG-ALONG MOON, one of only five books he both wrote and illustrated. On being a childrenâs author Floyd says, âGiving kids a positive alternative to counteract the negative impact of what is conveyed in todayâs media is a huge opportunity.â Floyd lives in Pennsylvania with his wife (and agent) Velma and two sons. Find out How Your Boss Might Be Watching You at Work
Discover How Your Boss Might Be Watching You at Work Discover How Your Boss Might Be Watching You at Work More organizations are observing their workers electronically. Dynamic checking of representatives has risen as of late from 35 % to 80 %. Why? what can be done? Protection in todays working environment is generally fanciful. In this time of open space work areas, shared work area space, organized PCs and telecommuters, it is difficult to practically clutch a confidence in private space, said Ellen Bayer, AMAs HR practice pioneer. Why Companies Monitor Employees The reasons organizations screen worker exercises are legitimate business reasons, not only a craving to sneak around. The AMA recorded (in sequential request) five reasons given by overview organizations with respect to why they screen their workers. Lawful Compliance. In controlled enterprises, taping selling exercises gives both the organization and the buyer some level of lawful insurance. Additionally, electronic chronicle and capacity might be viewed as a component of a companys due determination in keeping satisfactory records and files.Legal Liability. Representatives who are accidentally presented to hostile realistic material on partners PC screens may charge an unfriendly work environment environment.Performance Review. Client support and buyer relations work force are regularly taped as they field calls, and tapes are checked on with managers to assess and improve work execution. Profitability Measures. Net-surfing, individual utilization of office email, or potentially dialing up 900 numbers use time and resources on non-business related activities.Security Concerns. Securing the estimation of restrictive corporate data is an essential worry during a time when email and web associations keep on extending. Work is done on hardware having a place with bosses who have a lawful right to the work result of the representatives utilizing it, Bayer said. It ought to be noticed that the review uncovered that 90 percent of the organizations taking part in any of these practices illuminate their workers that theyre doing as such. Likewise, the vast majority of the observing is performed on a spot-check premise as opposed to a progressing 24-hour premise. Your Rights As an Employee As a worker, not very many. As indicated by the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse New advances make it workable for managers to screen numerous parts of their representatives occupations, particularly on phones, work stations, through electronic and voice message, and when workers are utilizing the Internet. Such checking is for all intents and purposes unregulated. Along these lines, except if organization strategy explicitly states in any case (and even this isn't guaranteed), your boss may tune in, watch and read a large portion of your work environment interchanges. Their Fact Sheet 7: Workplace Privacy has an excellent synopsis FAQ about representatives rights, or need hence, concerning calls, PCs, email, and phone message. Commitment of Managers to Monitor Administrators have a commitment to their organization to screen the exercises of their workers to guarantee consistence with material laws and strategies. They screen their conduct, their adherence to the clothing standard, the manner in which they welcome clients. The need to screen their electronic exercises is similarly as extraordinary and the reasons are the equivalent. They ought to make certain to tell workers that they are being observed electronically, notwithstanding telling them what is being checked and why what is worthy and what isn't. The least demanding route is to create and distribute the organizations strategies as to the utilization of PCs, the web, email and voice message. Supervisors should screen for consistence and order as they would for some other organization strategy.

The Benefits of Accepting Constructive Criticism
The Benefits of Accepting Constructive Criticism The Benefits of Accepting Constructive Criticism We most likely all can relate significant expressions of counsel, investigates or criticism that we have gotten. The musings imparted to us, about us, can get perpetual, disguised rules that impact the decisions that we make. Tolerating counsel and basic criticism takes lowliness and transparency. It's difficult to concede that we're imperfect or recognize when we've acted in a problematic way. Be that as it may, tolerating guidance and afterward following up on those proposals is a key to personal growth and individual advancement. What follows are three of the most paramount bits of input that I've gotten, including insights concerning their effect, finishing with some last contemplations about the motivations to remain open to valuable analysis. 1. There's no reason for underperformance. Having considered a sociology as an undergrad, I discovered business college exceptionally troublesome. It was the first occasion when that I was presented to quantitative ideas in central courses, for example, bookkeeping and money. In spite of the fact that I was exceptionally intrigued by the point, I battled in financial matters class too. A large number of the understudies had been financial aspects majors at top colleges. My simple comprehension of the ideas was no match to their profound situated information, and I wound up at first performing inadequately on tests. I visited the educator during available time and disclosed to her that I was unable to rival understudies who had a set up establishment in the course materials. The teacher, an Italian lady, tranquilly and with an indifferent flick of her hand, said to me, So then you'll need to work more diligently. I don't know whether it was the gruffness in interpretation or a social mannerism, however her brief seven word answer said everything. I quit grumbling about the intrinsic shamefulness of the circumstance and worked harder. In truth, I didn't finish the class without a hitch. In any case, with the work that I put in, I passed the course and I took in a great deal all the while. I came away from this experience understanding that on occasion I will confront unreasonable impediments throughout everyday life and profession. Nothing is picked up from focusing on irregularity. You prevail by pulling together on the errand and endeavoring to conquer the test. 2. Don't simply call attention to issues. Detail arrangements. I am normally systematic, and I effectively distinguish issues and wasteful aspects. During a criticism meeting at one of my past occupations, my chief demonstrated that my capacity to call attention to issues was not as supportive, or profession improving, as a capacity to likewise recommend arrangements. The individual who is continually bringing up issues is a Debby Downer that no one needs to work with. Be that as it may, the individual who can recognize territories of progress and present efficient suggestions is bound to convince others to consider and actualize changes. This kind of individual has a superior potential for success of making significant upgrades to the business. Making this alteration requires a slight change in mentality. In the event that you, similar to me, are normally disposed to consider the to be as half unfilled or, as I like to turn it, consider the to be as having the capacity to be more full, change your perspective and ponder approaches to fill the glass. I as of late set up this methodology as a regular occurrence when I informed my director concerning a difficult that necessary consideration. In the wake of introducing my perceptions, the chief asked me, What are a few things that you think would improve the circumstance? I had the option to introduce what I thought were fitting following stages and clarified why I thought about these perfect arrangements. Doing as such, I feel, persuaded partners that an issue existed and empowered ideal activity. 3. Always express your genuine thoughts. I spent the late spring between my two years of business college interning at an innovation organization. As the main female in a gathering of six understudies, I attempted to interface with my companions and regularly felt that nobody was tuning in to the thoughts that I shared. As the mid year advanced, I ended up developing drained and getting increasingly pulled back. Toward the finish of the mid year entry level position, we were approached to impart criticism to each other. I got the accompanying bit of input (summarized from memory) from one of the assistants with whom I was close. At times Stephanie appears to keep down with her considerations, letting others command the discussion despite the fact that, in correlation, their focuses are not as solid as hers. Despite the fact that Stephanie talks less frequently than others, I need her to realize that when she talks, individuals tune in. Whats in Your summary - Hallie Crawford
Whatâs in Your summary Recently I have received countless resumes that start either with the personâs education or their professional experience. When I receive a resume like that, my first thoughts are⦠What type of position is this person looking for? What skills, experience, or expertise are they offering? What is this personâs value proposition? Do I really have to read through the entire resume to find out what they have to offer my company? In short⦠Where is the summary? Before choosing a book to read, do you just go by the picture at the front of the book? Or do you read the summary at the back? Like the summary on any good book, your profile is just as important. It provides the reader a quick snapshot of your value proposition. This summary can let the reader know exactly what type of position you are looking for, how many years experience you bring with you, the industry you have worked in, and the expertise you offer. A summary is best if it is only a few lines, or maybe just 3-4 concise bullet points. Donât get lost in trying to explain everything the rest of your resume should do that. Instead, highlight your value whether it be in the number of years of experience in a specific industry, or types of positions youâve held, or the results you have delivered in your past positions. Identifying this value is key to providing a theme which the result of your resume should be validating. So donât forget to include a summary in your resume. It is more important than you think. Alba says they loved the idea, and one of them offered to introduce Alba to his publisher and serve as his executive editor. This is really a fun story you can read the article here. One of my favorite quotes from her article: Even if your book sucks, even if its small, even if its lame, just being the author of a book gives you credibility. Even if it SUCKS? Why Employers Look for Fit - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career
Why Employers Look for Fit - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Your first goal when looking for a job is to get an interview. You offer your candidacy by submitting your résumé. The challenge is that youâre in competition with a large number of very qualified applicants. If youâre lucky, your résumé gets you an interview. The decision to invite you for this coveted meeting was based on the appearance of your résumé, its overall content, the skills it reflects you possess, and, mainly, the accomplishments you highlighted via a format of bulleted lists. But now the second competition starts. It consists in you versus the other candidates vying for the same job. Look at the situation from the hiring managerâs vantage point: the manager needs to make a selection. Say there are five very qualified and handpicked applicants with great skills and with lists of appropriate accomplishments. So, whatâs going to be the differentiator? The answer is the fit. The hiring manager who is the ultimate decision maker has a series of pertinent questions and is answering them subjectively. Some of those questions might be: What do we have in common? It is known that people like to hire others like themselves. Are we sharing the same values? For example, whatâs your attitude toward customer service? Are you innovative when solving problems? Is cost cutting an important goal of yours? What is your work style? For example, are you in the habit of working long hours? Do you keep an open-door policy? Are you working well as part of a team? Are you competitive? What image did you leave behind after the interview? Did you carry yourself well during the interview? Were you dressed properly? Did you bathe yourself in perfume? What was your accent like? your speech pattern? your tone of voice? your speech volume? What about your walking pace? your posture? your air of confidenceor lack thereof? What kind of personality do you have? Are you confident? Would you fit in well with company team members? Would you get along? Can we afford you? Are your salary expectations aligned with the companyâs budget for this position? Are you flexible about compensation? Can we make a deal that both parties will feel good about? As you can see, the fit component of the hiring decision-making process is not only complex and driven by the psychological makeup of the hiring manager but also biased and subjective. Good luck in your maneuvering through this maze. The best advice for winning the hiring manager over is to get input from a professional counselor who can offer you unbiased information based on factual knowledge and years of experience.
